As everyone gets set to head out to jobs and externships a question I've heard…
If you are not graduating this April (see below if you are), database access remains pretty much the same over the summer. However, there is an important caveat. This is law school, so there are always caveats!
If you are doing paid work for a law firm (or anywhere else), do not use your Westlaw account. You can use Westlaw for academic work, a nonprofit, etc. You can also use Westlaw to study up on a topic. But you can’t use it for paid client research.
You can use Bloomberg Law and Lexis+ as much as you want, even if you are getting paid for the work. But always check with the law firm you are working for first. They may want you to use their Lexis+ or Westlaw account to do research so they can track the work you do for clients. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the firm’s research policy before you start work on any projects.
You can continue to use HeinOnline, EBSCO, newspaper subscriptions, and everything else over the summer.
Graduates, this next part is for you. (Congratulations! We’re going to miss you!)
Westlaw: You have six months of access after graduation through the Grad Elite program. Keep a lookout for an email asking you to sign up for Grad Elite. You get 60 hours of research time on Westlaw per month through Grad Elite.
Lexis+: Graduates get access through the end of 2025.
Bloomberg Law: Graduates get six months of access post-graduation.
Quimbee: Quimbee access continues until July 31, 2025 for graduates. February bar takers who would like to extend access until February 2026 should email Iantha Haight.
HeinOnline and Other Databases: Graduates have access through July 31, 2025.
More information is available on the Law Library website (click here to view), or email Iantha Haight with questions.
