Adjacent to the Reference Desk are two bookshelves comprising the Reference Collection. These books cannot be checked out, but patrons are welcome to use them for short periods within the library. The Reference Collection includes general reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopedias, both legal and general. There are several Spanish-English legal dictionaries which are invaluable for anyone helping a Spanish-speaking client. Gray’s Anatomy and the Physician’s Desktop Reference are helpful with personal injury and medical malpractice research. Our 1987 Encyclopaedia Britannica is a snapshot of the world just prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, useful for gaining historical context when researching international law or legislative history.

The Reference Collection includes several foreign legal guides, helpful in understanding the legal process of a different country when studying comparative law.  You may also want to peruse the complete works of Shakespeare if your favorite appellate judge alludes to a lesser-known work of the Bard. Our collection of local and world atlases provides geographic data and context from before the era of Google Maps. Finally, we keep several copies of the Holy Scriptures, for those times when no other resource is getting you the answers you seek.

If you have any questions about works in the Reference Collection, or would like help finding a specific resource, please don’t hesitate to contact the Reference Desk either in person, by phone at 801-422-6658, or by emailing reference@law.byu.edu.
